PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Our recent affiliations with the American Geological Institute (AGI) and the Natural Science Collections Alliance (NSCA) and our expansion into Europe have given SMMP new opportunities. Our challenge, of course, will be to make the most of our new opportunities to more effectively fulfill our mission:

  1. To foster recognition of mineral science collections as essential scientific, educational and cultural resources.

  2. To promote support for growth, maintenance and use of collections and exhibits.

  3. To advance museum practice through cooperation in the development, review and dissemination of information.

We need your help ... but don't worry. What I'm suggesting should come very naturally: Get involved in SMMP by communicating with one another. If you have announcements, requests, questions or suggestions, communicate them through our Web site or directly to your fellow curators via our group email. Remember, also, that SMMP's ultimate success will depend upon its reach, so encourage your colleagues who aren't already members to join SMMP.

Tony Kampf
President

COLLECTION PRESERVATION
An Announcement from Michael Hawkins
New York State Museum

We have begun a large scale project that we think is potentially important to the future preservation of underfunded and undermanaged institutional collections. We have signed an agreement with Hamilton College in Clinton, New York to take long term loan of the Oren Root Collection, an important 19th century collection heavy with New York State specimens that are of particular interest to us. We have agreed to curate and database the entire collection, as well as, digitally photograph many of its important specimens. Also, we are building a special display case for its highlights to be shown to the public in our Mineral Gallery.

The recognition by larger institutions of our responsibility to assist and preserve important collections that might not otherwise survive comes, unfortunately, too late for many. However, we think that it is important to preserve whatever we can preserve at this point in time and, hopefully, get the word out to smaller institutions and university geology departments that there is interest in preserving important and underappreciated collections.
