Collections Manager, Mineral Sciences
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County,
the largest natural history museum in the western United States and a
national leader in exhibitions, education and research, seeks a
Collections Manager for its Mineral Sciences Department. This is an
excellent opportunity for a dynamic, motivated, experienced and
knowledgeable mineralogist who recognizes and is committed to the role
of mineralogical collections as essential scientific, educational and
cultural resources. The Collections Manager has responsibility for the
Museum’s active 150,000-specimen mineral and gem collection, under the
direct supervision of the Curator of Mineral Sciences.
Duties include:

Organization, documentation, storage, security
and conservation of the collection (minerals, gems, rocks, meteorites
and related objects).

Processing and documentation of all incoming and
outgoing specimen transactions, including purchases, donations,
exchanges and loans.

Participation in specimen acquisition through
purchase, donation, exchange and field collecting.

Handling of collection-related and general
inquiries from researchers and the public.

Participation in the planning, installation and
maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibits, including those at
gem and mineral shows.

Participation in educational and other public
programming activities of the Museum.

Recruitment, development and supervision of
volunteers and/or student workers.

Optional participation in ongoing or original
research and attendance at professional meetings.
Requirements include:

Master's degree or equivalent in mineralogy.

At least 3 years’ technical experience in mineral
sciences involving curation and/or collection management and a
detailed knowledge of mineral collection management techniques.

Extensive systematic knowledge of minerals and a
good working knowledge of gemology.

Proficiency in basic PC computer applications (MS
Office, etc.) and, most importantly, database applications (preferably
Superbase).

Basic working knowledge of scientific
mineralogical equipment such as petrographic microscope, x-ray
diffraction and SEM/EDS.

Proficiency in the use of the English language,
both verbal and written.

Physical ability to do basic bending, stooping
and climbing and strength to lift up to 50 lbs.

Flexibility to occasionally work on weekends and
to travel out of town.
